WHAT WE SAW, WHAT WE LOVED.

Recently a few members of our Sourcey Squad attended the Australian Promotional Products Association (APPA) Trade Show in Melbourne. APPA trade shows are a thriving tradition in the promotional products industry, giving distributors and suppliers an occasion to conduct business face-to-face. Distributors get access to the latest styles, an opportunity to gather samples and connect with new and existing industry suppliers. We loved the opportunity to get up close and personal with suppliers, see what’s new in the merch world, and it got us VERY excited for our clients. To tell you all about it, we are going to check in with our Founder, Em, to share her expert insights. She is brimming with creative energy and clever ideas and we are here for it! Let’s hear from our leading lady…

AN APPA WRAP UP

1. What new and emerging trends did you identify this year at APPA?

We spotted so many interesting and exciting trends! One standout was the influx of female-founded businesses and B Corp suppliers stepping into the spotlight, which we absolutely love!

This year, we also noticed an even broader range of RPET (recycled plastic) products hitting the market, which made us very happy. From rPET umbrellas to puffer vests and even phone chargers, the possibilities for turning recycled plastic into fabulous items are endless! Eco-friendly merch is a huge focus, and we’re all in for it. Particularly exciting were the solar power banks!

And let’s talk about color! We are loving the on-trend off-the-shelf color ranges we’re seeing. Instead of the usual red, black, white, and navy options, we’re now treated to a rainbow of items with fast turnarounds, available in a range of stunning Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors to suit a much wider range of brands.

All in all, we’re loving the industry’s shift towards quality over quantity. Less of those cheap stress balls and fidget spinners, and more retail-quality gifting that clients and customers will cherish! It’s a move towards more targeted gifting, increased thoughtfulness, and less landfill waste.

2. Were there any suppliers that stood out to you?
We have a soft spot for female-founded businesses and are always keen to support them. Additionally, a new supplier caught our eye with their rPET apparel; they’re an Indigenous-founded business, which we’re thrilled to support. Their use of recycled materials and quality merch range is impressive, and they even offer amazing eco-friendly print techniques.
3. Which were your FAVE promotional products?
I love the 3 in 1 charger. It’s a great branded desktop item and the B2B market loves them. Not only does it claim prime real estate on someone’s desk, but it’s also incredibly useful! We’re all about practical items that people can use for a long time. I also love the new range of RPET umbrellas with the all over design! Gone are the days you needed to print your logo on a panel. Now, you can create a custom design all over the umbrellas for max branding exposure to really showcase your brand and its eco to boot! Finally everyone loves a pair of branded flip flops (thongs) but now we’re turning with the trends and doing custom slides! They’re more versatile, more comfortable and offer a better branding presence!
4. Were there some colours that stood out?

We were blown away by the range of beautiful PMS colors available to suit a much wider range of brands. Colours aren’t just pretty; they’re a powerful marketing tool to help convey emotions and messages. When choosing the right hues for your promotional products, consider the psychology behind each shade.

5. Why is it important to attend industry events like APPA?
I feel like it’s important for me to go to these events to touch base and have in-person conversations with our suppliers! We often don’t get to see each other FTF. I think relationships are so important. Also it’s great for younger members of our team to come and see what’s out there and to touch and feel the products! And of course, it’s essential to stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements.
6. What are you most looking forward to now?
I love attending the Australian APPA trade shows, and I am looking forward to the HK trade show and Canton fare later this month! We’ll be there to scope out global trends, meet with suppliers, discover new ones, and hunt for unique products not yet in Australia. I’m absolutely buzzing with excitement!
